Diversity

1. Should efforts in favor of medical student diversity be focused during admissions or farther upstream

When looking at the correlations between the MMIs and diversity, it was found that the MMI scores were uncorrelated to gender, size of community of origin, and income level. It was found to be positively correlated with age but negatively correlated with aboriginal status. When looking at the correlation between GPA and diversity, it was found that GPA negatively correlated with age and aboriginal status but positively correlated with income level. Lastly when looking at the correlation between the MCAT and diversity, it was found that it also was negatively correlated with age and aboriginal status but was positively correlated wth the size of the community of origin. Because these assessment factors did not completely neutralize the diversity-limiting factors, it was concluded that student diversity should be focused more upstream.

2. The Leaky Pipeline: Factors Associated With Early Decline in Interest in Premedical Studies Among Underrepresented Minority Undergraduate Studies

No association was found between scholastic ability as measured by SAT scores and changes in level of interest. Largely because of negative experiences with chemistry classes, results show underrepresented minority students and women show a disproportionate decline in interest in continuing premedical studies which results in fewer applying to medical school.
