This fundamental level introduces the basic concepts of acupuncture treatment including the neuroanatomical, evidence-based and basic approach to common musculoskeletal conditions. Safety issues and potential complications from acupuncture treatments will be discussed. There will be ample opportunities to practice safe needling in small group sessions.

Course 1A25 Basic Concepts of Acupuncture
This is an introductory course on theories of Acupuncture. Emphasis will be placed on evidence-based reviews of protocols used in clinical studies. The safety issues and adverse effects will be discussed based on current scientific literature. Locations of a set of points will be demonstrated through class illustrations and small group practice sessions. Students will have ample opportunities to practice safe needling techniques in small group practice sessions. This course is required as a pre-requisite to all the courses in the program.
Regional Approach to Acupuncture
Course 1B25. Extremities Problems
This course will familiarize students with the common acupuncture points for upper and lower limb problems. Presentations will include clinical trials done on these common conditions and the protocols evaluated. Evidence-based reviews of conventional treatment will also be discussed. There will be a sufficient amount of time in small group practice sessions for students to become competent in point locations and needling techniques for problems in these regions.
Pre-requisite: Course 1A25 or permission of the instructor
Course 1C25. Axial Skeletal Problems
This course will familiarize students with the common acupuncture points for headaches, common neck and back problems. Presentations will include clinical trials done on these common conditions and the protocols evaluated. Evidence-based reviews of conventional treatment will also be discussed. There will be a sufficient amount of time in small group practice sessions for students to become competent in point locations and needling techniques for problems in these regions.

Course 1D25. Problem-based Approach to Acupuncture Application
This course brings together concepts learned from previous courses and examined the relationship between different treatment paradigms. At the end of this course, students will have in-depth knowledge of point selections for the problems they encountered. Cases from common musculoskeletal problems will be presented. Some special techniques will be illustrated to deal with common MSK problems they encounter in their practices. Relevant special techniques will also be discussed.
